Seva (selfless service) is a concept that we keep trying to teach our kids through actions. Although, I’m not sure how “selfless” these experiences are, as I think they get more out of it that they give. Kindness feels soooooo good!
We recently joined friends at Feeding San Diego where our group bagged 4020 pounds of oranges for local San Diego residents who are facing hunger.
Did you know that 1 in 6 kids don’t know where their next meal is coming from? We were shocked to learn this and were looking forward to helping change that.
Feeding San Diego provides food to over 260 neighborhood partners serving 63,000 children, families and seniors each and every week.
They work with grocery stores (like Albertson’s, Barons, Food4Less, Ralph’s, Smart & Final, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, etc.), farmers, restaurants, manufacturers and retailers (like Costco, Starbucks, Target, Walmart, etc.), collecting all of the extra food that might otherwise go to waste.
These oranges were considered “ugly food” because they might not be as ripe, or look a little funny shaped. They actually looked really good to us. We were craving a juicy orange all night while we worked!
We bagged them into four pound bags and carefully counted how many bags we boxed.
All the oranges we bagged were going to local schools that served low income families.
The pounds and pounds of oranges that we actually worked with didn’t even scratch the surface of how many more oranges were in the giant refrigerator! It’s going to take them days to get through all of these. We were amazed and how much food could go to waste if it wasn’t for Feeding San Diego coming in and saving the day!
Feeding San Diego not only helps relieve hunger, but also helps teach kids about Seva. We are grateful for all they are doing for our community and for the amazing lessons they are teaching our kids!

Thank you Feeding San Diego!
