Skiing At Mountain High Ski Resort

Mountain High Ski Resort is the easiest and closest winter resort in Southern California. It’s located just an hour and a half from Los Angeles and Orange County in the Angeles National Forest. Believe it or not, there is no mountain driving. The gentle uphill journey is so gradual you won’t even realize you are climbing into the mountains. You definitely won’t find an easier drive to a winter wonderland anywhere.

This was the girls’ first time skiing, and they were super-excited to be adventuring out into the snow. Living in Southern California we have a very limited amount of winter clothing and gear. We dug deep into the garage storage bins and pulled out our neglected hats, gloves and long underwear. Our neighbors have twins a few years older than our girls and we are blessed to get their hand-me-downs. They gave us these cute snowsuits after only wearing them once! How adorable are they?!

We put the girls into the Mt. High ski school to give them the basics. They loved it! They learned all about balancing, edges, and most importantly, how to stop.

Then they took them up on their first chairlift. Thankfully I wasn’t around for that. Otherwise, I would have been a wreck because there is no bar on the kiddie lift. Having them up 20-30 feet without a bar kind of freaked me out….but I seemed to be the only one concerned. ;)-

They were cautious at first, but in no time flat, they were flying down the mountain like little speed demons!

Ski school was awesome for so many reasons. Not only did it give them a good foundation for how to ski, but it also gave us a daytime date out on the slopes! So fun… and quite romantic. (Yes, I am bundled up like crazy! I’m not a huge fan of being cold.)

I’ve been a snowboarder for decades. But now that the whole family will be out on the slopes, I decided to switch back to skiing so we can all do it together. It was like riding a bike! It felt so good to be back on skis again.

We met back up with the girls at 3:00 pm, after their full day lesson. By then they were pros and we had a blast skiing the afternoon away as a family.

The next time we head to the mountains to ski we’ll probably put them into lessons again to warm them up and give them a few more skills…and take advantage of another daytime date with my hubby. And then ski the rest of the day away with the girls. It’s the best of both worlds!

Mountain High is so close to get to from anywhere in Southern California. It’s a fun and easy winter get-away and gives SoCal kids a chance to experience winter snow.

At the time of writing the children’s lessons (ages 4-12) range from $114 (half day 10:00-12:00 or 1:00-3:00) to $141 (full day 10:00-3:00). Prices include an 8-hour lift ticket and rentals. Full day includes snack and lunch.

Children ages 1-3-years old can take lessons on virtual snow, where they learn how to stand without falling, how to stop and how to turn.

Lift tickets are $49. Ski rentals (skis, boots, poles) are $30/adults and $20/kids. Helmut rentals are $5. No advanced reservations are needed.
