Located in the lovely neighborhood of Golden Hill, on 25th Street between B and C Streets , is Krakatoa Cafe. The eatery is a healthy and tasty place to grab a bite when you are visiting downtown San Diego. The cafe gets its name from the explosive volcanic island in Indonesia but is well-known in the area for being a chill, local hangout and eatery.
Established in an old Craftsman house, the cafe is cozy and the patio is dog friendly. They offer a variety of homemade baked goods, breakfast items and lunch sandwiches, salads and soups. They have gluten-free and vegan options available, as well as fresh juices and smoothies.
I stumbled upon this little gem while running an errand downtown. Everything on the menu looked so good that I had trouble picking just one thing to order. Dishes like the Vulcano and Vesuvius called my name. As did the Pompeii and Santorini. I finally decided on the Bliznets, an open-faced sandwich with chickpea salad topped with avocado, micro greens and edible flowers on gluten-free bread. It was not only delicious, but gorgeous to boot!
With a laid back charm, it’s an easy place to relax, socialize and eat on the patio under the shade of their large fig tree. And if you’re looking to be productive, they’ve got free wireless. You can set up shop and enjoy a day at the “office” while you sip on one of their specialty lattes, teas or smoothies.
When all your work is done, feel free to stay and meet some friends for one of their local IPAs. They have happy hour specials and sometimes have live entertainment.
The Krakatoa Cafe is open Monday thru Saturday from 6:30am-8:00pm and on Sundays from 6:30am-6:00pm.
